Michigan Junior Masters Association crowned three new champions at the Wes Gibson Memorial event at Sherman Bowling Center in Muskegon, Michigan. Winning for the first time were Jeffrey Lizewski II (Woodhaven, MI) in the Boys U20 division, while Keith Edgerton (Yale, MI) and Karli Van Duinen (Muskegon, MI) captured the U15 titles. The U20 ladies saw Imari Blond (Flint, MI) win her fifth MJMA title.

Lizewski made it hard on himself after qualifying 11th in the field of 12 to move to match play. In round one, he ousted Junior Team USA member Chad Stephen (Flint, MI) in a very close match 434‐429 and then took care of the #3 seed Ryan Land (Royal Oak, MI) in another very close match 440‐432 in round two. IN the semi‐finals, Lizewski again saw a fight to the finish as Cody Johnston (Sandusky, MI) gave him all he had but came up short 395‐383 to allow Lizewski to reach the finals.

On the other side of the bracket, David Winters (Livonia, MI) took the #1 seed honors for the first time in his MJMA career. After a bye in round one Winters disposed of #8 seed Drake Brazzy (Flat Rock, MI) and then in the semi‐finals took out the #4 seed Kyle Lewis (Lansing, MI) to set up a finals match with Lizewski. In what proved to be a tough match due in part to the lane conditions getting real bad, it was Lizewski sitting on top at the end with a 366‐351 win to earn his first MJMA title.

On the ladies side, Blond got a bye in round one and then took care of Stephanie Schalk (Roseville, MI) in round two to reach the finals. Bailey Gipson (Davison, MI) the #6 seed knock out Anna Maxwell (Westland, MI) in round one and then ousted the #2 seed Kaylee Johnson (Davison, MI) by two pins in the semi‐finals to set up a finals with Blond. Luck was not on Gipson’s side in the finals though as Blond opened up a good lead in game one and then cruised to her fifth MJMA title 380‐318.

The U15 division crowned two new champions as Karli Van Duinen (Muskegon, MI) won her first title in her home town. Van Duinen who was seeded second ousted the #3 seed Brenna Hartzler (Smithville, OH) in round one and then completed the finals win over #4 seed Morgan Brunner. The guys crowned their new champion as Keith Edgerton (Yale, MI) came from the #4 spot and ran up two wins, first against #1 seed David Schaberg (Holt, MI) and then finished off the day by beating #3 seed Kyle Pranger (Rockford, MI) in the finals.

This event was started to honor the memory of one of youth bowlings greatest supporters in Wes Gibson who we lost back in 2017. His work with youth bowling in West Michigan and through the State Board helped guide the future of this sport and it gave many young athletes the chance to compete at a number of levels of competition. His loss will be felt for a long time in Michigan and we host this event to honor his memory and all his contributions.
