The Michigan Junior Masters Association (MJMA) rolled into Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen park this past weekend as a field of 105 bowlers were looking to make their mark on yet another Junior Gold pattern. There was the largest turnout for the U15 boys division in MJMA history as 18 of them looked to earn a title and a junior gold spot as well.

Seven time U15 boys champion David Schaberg top the field after the six games of qualifying shooting an impressive 1225 but there were five other bowlers looking to have their chance at a title as well. In the first round of match play Jacob Johnson (Redford, MI) and Dallas Casey (Saline, MI) ended their two‐game, total pins match in a tie but in the one ball rolloff it was Johnson who got the strike he needed to advance to the semi finals against Schaberg. In the other match it was Carter Milasinovich (Macomb, MI) surviving a very low scoring match against Kyle Pranger (Rockford, MI) to advance and take on the #2 seed Ian Wright (Westland, MI).

Schaberg ended Johnson’s day with a 387‐348 win while Milasinovich took care of the #2 seed Wright 339‐ 327 to set up the finals with Schaberg. After game one, Schaberg had a good sized lead but as we have seen in the recent past no lead is really safe. Milasinovich made a big push in game two to overcome the lead but Schaberg was just too strong as he closed out the match with a string of late strikes to take his 8th MJMA U15 Boys title 422‐374.

The U15 Ladies saw Kadence Bottrall (Dorr, MI) take the top spot after qualifying with a 1061 total while Brenna Hartzler (Smithville, OH) grabbed the second seed, Karli Van Duinen (Muskegon, MI) took the #3 seed and Morgan Brunner (Gobles, MI) rounded out the match play field as the fourth seed.

Brunner, bowling in her second match play portion of an event, broke serve and took out the #1 seed Bottrall to advance to her first MJMA final. Hartzler did her part by winning her match over Van Duinen and looked to earn a second straight U15 ladies title. Both Hartzler and Brunner were bowling with confidence and after game one it was still anyone’s match. Hartzler, however, pulled away in game two and won her secon MJMA U15 ladies title with a 334‐302 victory.

The U20 boys saw all kinds of upsets in their match play portion of the event as five of the higher seeded bowlers were eliminated in round one, including the qualifying leader Justin O’Shaughnessy (Canton, MI). The upheaval continued in round two as only one of the top seeds advanced to the semi final round of competition.

In the semi‐finals, the highest seed was #8, Connor Lackey (Jackson, MI). He was joined by Brandon Kreiner (Davison, MI) the #13 seed, Drake Bazzy (Flat Rock, MI) the #14 seed and finally Mitchell Rusinek (Canton, MI) the #10 seed. Lackey and Bazzy continued their runs to the top as they eliminated Rusinek and Kreiner to advance to the finals.

The finals match went back and forth with Lackey taking a three pin lead after game one. Game two was again back and forth and since Lackey finished forst all he could do was watch as Bazzy needed two strikes in the tenth to earn the title. Bazzy got the first strike but on the second stroke a stubborn 6 pin gave the win to Lackey who earned his first MJMA title 379‐376.

The U20 Ladies had their share of upsets as well as the #1 seed Emily Gurin (Dearborn Hts, MI) was eliminated in round one as was #3 seed Kalee Johnson (Davison, MI). Madalyn Harden (Canton, MI) who had knocked Gurin out in round one found the sidelines in round two thanks to Makayla Lancioni (New Hudson, MI) while Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI) the #2 seed eliminated Corinne Schmaltz (Caro, MI) who had knocked out Johnson. In the finals Macunovich opened a small lead after game one but put on the gas in game two to cruise to her fourth MJMA U20 title 389‐324.

We also stamped the tickets for six more bowlers for the 2019 IBC Youth Junior Gold Championships to be held in the Metro Detroit area next July. Carter Milasinovich, Morgan Brunner, Isaac Dudla, Brad Delmarle, Emily Gurin and Kaylee Hall will all represent MJMA at the event next July.

Our next event is going to be held on October 13‐14, 2018 at Royal Svcot Lanes in Lansing, Michigan. Royal Scot normally hosts our Adult Junior event but a scheduling conflict saw a need to change the venues around a bit this year and this will be a traditional two‐day singles event. Bowling will start at 11AM on Saturday the 13th with eight games of qualifying. The bowlers advancing to match play will come back on Sunday at 9AM to bowl head to head and then the top finishers will close out the tournament in a stepladder finals. Check in on Saturday will begin at 9:30AM.

Cookie dough orders will also be due on the 13th so don’t forget to bring your order forms and funds to the torunament office that morning. Orders will be delivered to the event in Jackson on November 17th. If you need more forms or have any questions, please contact Jerry Tarabek.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Lansing on October 13th for another great event.
