The Michigan Junior Masters Association kicked off its 33rd season in traditional form at Lodge Lanes in Belleville, Michigan. Bob Goike and his team have opened the season for us each year since 1991 and always do a fabulous job in making sure the conditions are absolutely correct. This year, 100 bowlers made the trip to compete in the season opening event and there was plenty of great action throughout the event.

The U20 girls division saw eight ladies make it to the bracket match play portion with Stephanie Schalk (Roseville, MI) claiming the #1 seed after qualifying. In the two‐game, total pins format for the brackets, all four of the top seeds advanced to the second round to fight it out in the semi finals. Schalk faced a tough match against #4 seed Macailin Rodriguez (Kentwood, MI) who had won our championship event in June. Rodriguez ended Schalk’s day with a 358‐332 victory while in the other semi final match, Taylor Davis (Burton, MI) the #3 seed knocked off the #2 seed Hannah Forton (Macomb, MI) 376‐353 to set up a match versus Rodriguez. Davis was not to be denied as she established things early and hung on to her lead to win her 10th MJMA title with a 345‐329 win.

The Boys U20 division saw a couple of upsets in round one of the brackets as the #1 seed, Antar Howard (Kalamazoo, MI) was ousted by the #16 seed Zakarey Geer (Madison Hts, MI) and #12 seed Chad Stephen (Flint, MI) ended the day for the #5 seed Drake Bazzy (Flat Rock, MI). In round two Geer continued his climb as he took care of #9 seed Taran Heersma (Shelby Twp, MI) while the rest of the higher seeds took care of business and advanced to the semi‐finals.

Geer’s day ended in the semi finals as #4 seed Mitchell Rusinek (Canton, MI) put up some big scores and moved on the finals winning 479‐416. The other semi final saw #2 seed Norman Baldwin (Alto, MI) defeat #3 seed Korey Reichard (Jackson, MI) 447‐356 to set up a finals showdown with Rusinek. Rusniek continued to score well as the left side seemed to be holding up better than the right hand side was and he took Baldwin out with a 432‐395 win to earn his first MJMA title.

The U15 ladies put on a great show as four bowlers moved from the qualifying round to the match play portion. The top seed, Karli Van Duinen (Muskegon, MI) saw her day end earlier than she would have hoped as #4 seed Melanie Straub (Chesterfield, MI) eliminated her with a 365‐300 effort. The other semi final saw #2 seed Kadence Bottrall (Dorr, MI) defeat #3 seed Morgan Brunner (Gobles, MI) 357‐337 to set up the finals match with Straub. Bottrall had been in finals matches before and that experience showed as she filled frames throughout the two games and earned her first MJMA U15 title with a 351‐293 victory.

The U15 boys showed off a bit with some really strong scoring in the bracket match play portion. Top seed Kyle Pranger (Rockford, MI) came out strong and posted a 423‐323 score to end the day for #4 seed Aydan Coffman (Elwood, IN). The other semi final saw the #3 seed Dallas Casey (Saline, MI) squeek out a win over #2 seed Carter Milasinovich 389‐388. In the finals, both boys continued to roll strong games on the tough Junior Gold pattern but it was Pranger who came out on top to earn his second MJMA U15 title, 418‐381.

We also awarded a number of Junior Gold spots for this event as Norman Baldwin, Brendan Best, Zakarey Geer, Noah Samuels, Makayla Lancioni, Victoria Giardina, Karli Van Duinen and Dallas Casey all earned their spots for a chance to bowl in the national event to be held in the Greater Detroit area in July 2019.

Our next event will be at the place this whole thing started, Cherry Hill Lanes North in Clarkston, Michigan with our first two‐day event of the year on August 25th and 26th. The qualifying will begin on Saturday starting at 11:00AM with check‐in beginning at 9:30AM. Those bowlers who qualify for match play will return Sunday morning starting at 9:00AM. Match play will be followed directly by stepladder finals in each division. This will be a Junior Gold qualifying event and to earn a spot you will need to be a MJMA member, a Junior Gold member and not have earned a spot for the July 2019 event in Metropolitan Detroit. Unlike our one‐day events where the spots are awarded after qualifying, we will award the spots at the very end of the event on Sunday.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Clarkston. If you have any questions please contact us either through the website email or by calling Jerry Tarabek at (616) 780‐2095.
